Enter The 37th Chamber

This is my new favorite album.

If you weren't up on the 7 inches that came out 3 years ago I wouldn't blame you. Those snuck under the radar, but this album is too good not to own.

The El Michels Affair covers instrumentals from "Enter The 36th Chamber". Need I say more?

Just get it.

SDTW Italy

I can't be every where at once, but SDTW can. Nick McPherson went to Italy to dork around for 10 days and sent me a disc of flicks.

Enjoy.

Crazy.

Nice.

I like the drop shadow on this one Bery.

I wish we had subways that actually ran. Sigh....

Eyes of the lion.

O'Clock in Italy. Dude is a beast.

Scenic.

Yeah that's a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles whole car if you were curious.

So nice you gotta see it twice.

Trains, trains, trains.

No sh*t.

I get the impression this is the wrong old woman to rob.

You can take the guy out of Europe, but you can't take the Europe out of the guy. Stop listening to techno dudes.

Don't get nicked.

America F*ck Yeah!!!

This looks like some character from Pan's Labyrinth.

Death and ESG

Just for variety's sake here is something for your iPod other than dancehall, punk, and Big L.

An all-black early punk pioneer group from Detroit. This album wasn't released for over 30 years. That's pretty crazy in of itself. Other than that it's just a good record.

Death "For The Whole World To See"

Probably one of the most sampled records of all time. ESG was an all-girl lo-fi funk group. This is one of those you should have this records. Try and imagine a band like Le Tigre without the whole militant lesbian noise punk vibe and add good simple drums and bass.

Chaka

I'm not a walking encyclopedia of graffiti by any stretch. I don't really care to be either. I always end up laughing at that one graff dude that loves to "drop knowledge" about who started what style and which crew bombed the most and blah blah blah. I'm cool with just looking at the pictures if you know what I mean.

But whenever I have talked to some of the big name writers from the West Coast and someone brings up the name Chaka they always just get this look like if didn't see it for yourself you may have trouble believing it. I was all of 9 when he was doing his thing so I can't say I witnessed it first hand either.

Chaka (LOD) is said to have bombed everything in his path from Orange County to SF starting in the late 80's on through the early 90's. He bombed at such a level that no one writer has really ever matched his output since then in terms of tags.

Check out the clip above and watch a real LA legend.

Chaka will be doing his first show ever at Mid City Arts on the 25th. If you live in the area you should definitely check it out.

Busy Signal Big Tune Alert!!!

This one is gonna be big. Not only is it a "Bam Bam" riddim revival, but Busy goes at Vybz whether he is saying so or not about using bleach on his face.

For those who don't follow Jamaica all that much "skin bleaching" is exactly what it sounds like. A cream is applied to the face that bleaches the skin color so it appears lighter.

And as you may also not know doing anything cosmetic as a guy means you're essentially gay and being gay in Jamaica is about as safe as being an in uniform KKK member in Harlem. In fact I think the latter would be safer.

The irony is Jamaican's are HUGELY homophobic, but every dancehall artist wears metro sexual Ed Hardy gear and bedazzled blazers and what not. I guess they haven't gotten the memo yet.

Poor Life Choices

I almost forgot to mention the PLC in my new additions to SDTW post. For those outside of Seattle it may not hold the same importance, but it is still a good hoot even if you don't know the criminals/victims/perpetrators in the pictures.

Poor Life Choices is the brainchild of Phillip Pheed. Pheed's other blog is mostly about eating food and design/video projects he does, but PLC is a whole other beast.

We all make Poor Life Choices, but to see them documented back to back, day in and day out, is really eye opening.

On PLC you will see unedited debauchery in all it's finest. I pray to whatever god you believe in that I do not end up on the site because it will probably mean that I will be serving time in County.

For those who dare bookmark PLC:

King Kong

I remember very clearly when I first heard King Kong. I was at Lou's Records chilling with Kofi and he asked me if I listened to Nitty Gritty. I told him I hadn't but I'd check him out since Kofi usually steered me to good records back then. I went and grabbed a double player of Nitty Gritty and King Kong. I popped it in and was sort of bummed. I thought I had been duped into some weird dudes with some warbling voices who just sounded really weird.

I kept listening to those albums and after a while I realized just how good King Kong and Nitty Gritty (for that matter) really were.

This album was done by Bobby Konders for his Massive B label and has way too many classic riddims to name.

When King Kong comes in with "Call Mr. Madden/ tell him to build me a million coffin" it's pretty much a wrap.

As far as I know King Kong is living in Ethiopia, but still does dubplates and performs from time to time.

New Additions to SDTW

Check out the newest inductees to the blog roll:

Persue/Bunny Kitty

ITSBUNNYKITTY

My good friend and all around style master Persue (pronounced per-sway) is always up to something big. As if being a world class graffiti writer and running one of the best skate shoe companies out (Vox) wasn't enough he's also got time to blog about it. To be honest I think he only blogs about 1/10 of the cool sh*t he's doing, but I'm not complaining.

Hurt You Bad Super Blog

HURTYOUBAD

HYB is serious. Graffiti blogs are pretty lame for the most part. They don't offer much in terms of content and a lot of them just re-post the same non sense over and over. HYB solves all of that with a nice "we don't really give a proper fuck what you think" attitude and a ton of original content from all over the world. Bookmark it.

The Boobs

The Boobs

Warning! This will become one of your guilty pleasure blogs. It's written entirely from the female perspective, but they are the type of chicks you wish were married to. I mean the entire purpose of their blog is to get their friends to put their "sweater puppets" on the web just for fun. Besides that they discuss things like theories on Lil Mama actually being Bow Wow with a wig and everything in between. Of course if you don't like things like boobs, ignorant rap, snapping on people, and tips on knocking boots, then maybe this isn't the blog for you.

Curriculum Mag

Curriculum Mag

Rogene can't be faded when it comes to San Diego skateboarding or skate blogs in general. The site is really cool and it's nice to see the homies putting down the blunt for a hot a second and doing something creative. Check the back issues for even more content.

Massive Daylight Graffiti Attack

I always had this idea from way back, but I mean to actually see people do it is a whole other ball game.

It's nuts. Some of them were there for over 5 minutes just painting away and I can't fully tell, but some of those kids didn't even look like they had hit puberty.

There may be hope for the youth just yet. Now if we could only get them to stop listening to Insane Clown Posse.

Barrington Levy

This one is a scorcher. Do not sleep on it. There are some alternate versions from the "Shaolin Temple" LP along with some other tunes that aren't on any other release that I know of.

I was hoping to keep "Pon Yu Toe" for myself to bust out at a dance, but it is too good not to share.

Just play that tune and try to tell me it doesn't murder a sound. The first time I heard it was on a mix from the late DJ Dusk a few years back and I have been searching for it ever since.

Track List:

This Place Is Too Dark
Call You On The Phone
True I Know
Roof Over My Head
Walk 2000 Miles (Extended Mix)
Sister Debbie
Doe Rae Me
My One & Only Lover
It's Not Easy
Butterfly
Pon Yu Toe

Nick showed this to me wayyyyy back. I don't remember if I posted it before. I'm getting old and can't remember what I've put up on here anymore. Sad.

Anyways, do yourself a favor and watch the clip.
