Sizzla Live

Seeing Sizzla live is the closest thing dancehall has to a punk show. It doesn't have stage diving and all that, but people get into a pretty decent frenzy.

If you ever get a chance to catch Mr. Kalonji on stage do it.

I believe this clip is from a show in Amsterdam. That would probably be a good place to see Sizzla. Everyone would be all baked and cordial except for the dude that ate too much space cake. He would probably be trying to ask every black dude with a shaved a head if they were DMX and if they could sign his hat for him.

Other than that it would be a pretty mellow crowd.

New Sizzla

Here is a new Sizzla album for you. There's a lot of throw away tracks on this one, but that is pretty much going to happen with any Sizzla album. It's better to just make your own Sizzla mix since he's all over the place.

Peep the "Babylon Ease Off" tune on there at the very least.

Sizzla "Solid As A Rock" Remix

Happy Friday.

I rediscovered this song after searching for Sizzla clips yesterday.

This has to be the best hip hop meets dancehall remix of all time. When it came out I remember people just losing their minds in the dance.

Also I remember being at a Tribe of Kings dance around this same time and Unite played "Dipset Anthem" with a Sizzla acapella over it and the crowd started moshing. I would like the mp3 stat Mr. Selector.

Make it happen.

Sizzla

I think Unite would probably agree with me in that you can't possibly make a "best of" for Sizzla. It would take a system that would rival the BCS formula.

For the uninitiated Sizzla Kalonji burst on the scene in 1995 and was one of the integral artists for the late 90's "culture" revival.

Wikipedia cites that he has 45 albums on the books 21 of which have charted on Billboard.

So as you can tell that's quite a catalog to comb through for the "best of."

This one does a decent job, but leans more on the one drop tunes and kind of skimps on the harder riddims. They make up for it with a lot of classics "Praise Ye Jah" "Like Mountain" "Be Strong" and and all of the hits from "Da Real Thing" are in there too.

Run it.

Sizzla In Gambia

I've been to a few Sizzla shows. They are by and large my favorite shows to go to in terms of crowds. They get pretty rowdy, but in a good way.

However I think the citizens of Gambia put to shame any crowd in the U.S. The first clip is of people driving and walking to the show and the second is the opening part of the show.

If you have a second watch these to get a scope of how big dancehall is in the far corners of the world.

Heavy Manners Sizzla Mix

After a really long haul the Heavy Manners "Fire Pon Dem" mix hosted by Sizzla Kalonji and mixed by Dasheye of Tribe of Kings Sound is finally available for download.

Instead of releasing it on SDTW I handed the mix off to someone who is known to deal in these sorts of things Chris a.k.a Lemon Red.

Chris and I linked at a Diplo/Bonde Do Role show which he was managing at the time and he is now working for the Money Studies label out of the Turntable Lab NY office. Look for big tings from him soon.

I can not even remember all the mixes he has released on his humble little blog, but all of them are strictly dope and it's an honor to have ours up on there.
