Atheism

For whatever reason Washington state makes the news every holiday season because of some religious hum bug. Last year at Sea-Tac Airport people caused a stink because they felt that only a "Christian" Holiday was being celebrated and forced all the decorations to be removed.

This year an Atheist group placed an ad next to a nativity scene and people again went nuts.

Whatever your beliefs happen to be you should be mature enough to accept the fact that every group has the constitutional right to advertise their agenda.

The best part is good Old Bill O' tried to get all tough and asked his viewers to call the Washington State Governor's office by putting her phone number up on screen. This led to 200 calls an hour for the whole day at Governor Gregoire's office.

Wow Bill. You have ridiculous pull. 200 is the same number of people that read this pinche blog an hour. So that's really not all that impressive. I expect more from you Papa Bear.

Graffiti Purge

I tend to stay away from offering my opinions on graffiti as much as possible these days. In the end it doesn't really matter what anyone thinks of graffiti itself or of those who participate in the medium.

Here is how I view the whole ball of wax that is graffiti.

Firstly, most graffiti writers are cunts. Fact. Most of the people involved with writing are pretty despicable to be honest. As always there are some huge exceptions, but it holds true for the most part. It is far better to let your work do the talking. Meeting a writer you admire is usually a very underwhelming event as they tend to either be one of the following: a scumbag, a drug addict, or my personal favorite just a plain old "sketchy" dude.

Secondly, when it comes down to style arguing about what is the best or worst style is purely subjective. This rings especially true to those who don't actually participate in graffiti.

My two cents on style:

I am not huge on productions in the slightest. Technical or intricate wild styles just don't motivate me in any real way. I appreciate the technique that is necessary to achieve them, but that is about all.

I prefer the more lowbrow affair. Graffiti from its inception has always been about letter form. While simple letters appear to be an easier affair I can assure you that simple styles are not as easy to pull off as one might assume. Mastering that style is essentially a life long endeavor that many writers strive for.

Below is a quick sampling of some flicks I really like. For those readers who paint just remember if you're not having fun you're not doing it right.

Enjoy.

SDTW's Holiday Gift Guide

I have the sinking feeling that my wish list might be a bit too esoteric for Santa. Not to mention I haven't exactly been a saint all year either. Fingers crossed.

More to come.

New Order

No I don't have the nerve to offer some sort of "insight" into the world of New Order.

What can you really say about them other than that they make good music. I think my affinity for bands like The Smiths, Joy Division, New Order, Portishead, and the like has really grown over the year seeing as we share the same miserable climate which breeds this type of melodramatic sound.

Track Listing:

  1. "Age of Consent" – 5:16
  2. "We All Stand" – 5:14
  3. "The Village" – 4:37
  4. "5 8 6" – 7:31
  5. "Blue Monday" – 7:29
  6. "Your Silent Face" – 6:00
  7. "Ultraviolence" – 4:52
  8. "Ecstasy" – 4:25
  9. "Leave Me Alone" – 4:40
  10. "The Beach" – 7:18
Peep the color swatch in the upper right hand corner of the cover. Peter Saville's design actually uses the code swatch to represent the band's name and album title. By using the key on the back you were able to decipher the actual title. Of course for the U.S release they had to actually put the words on the front because we are a nation of imbeciles apparently.

Who is Peter Saville?

Just some guy that designed this OBSCURE cover:

The obsession with all things bizarre and Jamaican continues. The well of design from which I find these covers is endless. I could make a blog dedicated solely to random reggae lp art and I would never get to the bottom.

Enjoy.

Kind of weak design, but a wicked photo. Oi! Oi! Oi!

Apologies

To everyone that is emailing me about Heavy Manners and "what the deal" is so to speak I assure you we haven't fallen off. Well sort of.

The new website is in its final stages and will be up shortly. Complete with new features galore and an online publication which features an interview with design genius and all around inspiration Kevin Lyons.

So hold tight, roll one up if need be, and calm down.

We will be back soon.

Quote of The Day: Steven Weinberg

“Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you'd have good people doing good things and evil people doing bad things, but for good people to do bad things, it takes religion.”
