Jamaican Shoot Out Death Toll Rises

Not sure if anyone even bothers to follow Jamaican news, but those retards at CNN have been posting stuff on the front page every day this week which has been kind of cool.

Anyways, you can read about it below if you want, but I can sum it up pretty quick.

This dude "Dudus" who is the leader of a gang called Shower Posse (funny name, scary dudes) has been trying to avoid getting extradited to the U.S so they can charge dude for being a coke king pin or whatever. Now news is coming that the Prime Minister used the Shower Posse (still can't get over that name, but stay with me) to strong arm votes for his party during elections.

Not one single piece of this story is really anything new to Jamaica. They have been doing this same song and dance for decades.

The only reason it is making the news is because 70 people (thus far) have been killed in the shootouts between Shower Posse and the police/govt.

Anyways, Jamaica is crazy and I am never going there.

Dancehall Killers

I've discussed numerous times over the years that dancehall culture and Jamaican culture as a whole is violent.

It is so easy to stereotype the whole "irie" island vibe thing with its funny clothes headbands, tams, Bob Marley stickers, incense, and the occasional white dreaded dude that won't shut the fuck up about "Jah".

The deal is though Jamaica is a violent place. Statistics say that over 500 people have been murdered in Jamaica since January. Three dancehall artists were shot in the last week.

Here is a list of reggae/dancehall murders compiled by The Observer.

I'm pretty sure it is no where even complete.

Daggering 101

Here is a brief attempt at explaining dancehall queens and daggering.

Dancehall queens are chicks who come to the dance to basically show off the most ridiculous dances that make even Freaknic (google image that, trust) look tame. They are Jamaican's most hood and most prized beauties all in one package.

The outfits worn to said dances are something between Jamaica carnival meets Slauson swap meet and are mostly hand made or commandeered from some sort of stripper retail outlet outside of Kingston. Once your outfit is did then you are going to want to get some sneakers because the ensuing amount of "f*ckery" that is sure to come will require athletic footwear, but there are still some sista souljahs that brave it in pumps.

While some dancehall queens have gone on to become artists in their own right such as Lady Saw and Patra most of them populate the crowd and attempt to steal the show with dances that would not be considered "Christian" to say the least.

This brings us to "daggering." This dance style is closer to sex in public than dancing. Let's be honest. Americans like to think that freaking is the penultimate in the sexually explicit dance world, but this could not be further from the truth. One peep at some daggeirng videos on Youtube will prove that you are not ready for the onslaught of pum pum thrusts. Nor does the average lady have the limber dexterity required to be stretched apart whilst simultaneously getting her "ninja boot" pounded on by some electric orange mohawked Jamaican telling her to "whine pon it"

What can I say though? I love Jamaicans in all their back assward ways and they never fail to amaze me.

In short Jamaicans do the darndest things.

The Current State of Jamaican Music

There has been a lot of crazy news coming out of the tiny island called Jamaica in the last few months.

The country is basically attempting to go through a moral "cleansing" by censoring, banning, and flat out doing anything possible to rid dancehall music from the masses.

Even if you don't have much interest in the music it is still interesting to think that a government and public counsels can just ban music simply because they disagree with its content.

Personally, I think they are going about it the wrong way. By placing the title "banned" or making it illegal to play in public they are essentially making the music taboo in the eyes of the youth. Anyone with some sense knows that as soon as you do that you are only going to make the youth embrace the music and the culture behind it even further.

Look at N.W.A and 2 Live Crew for example. These artists received zero radio play in the 80's and 90's (until radio friendly versions came into play obviously) and yet their first records went platinum in no time mainly due to the parental advisory labels placed on the covers. Kids saw those records as something that their parents wouldn't approve of and thought that was a good indication that they would like what was on the record.

It's not rocket science folks. If you don't want your kids to become "shottas" or "bad men" just raise your kids right and stop blaming popular music for all of the countries' woes.

Capleton "Stamping Flat"

This is Capleton's reaction to "Ramping Shop". I don't think it is Kartel diss like the tag line says.

Jamaicans are obsessed with this whole "lewd" lyrics thing. Police are now giving tickets to anyone who publicly plays "daggering" tunes on public transports.

Big Up

A Jamaican by the name of Usain Bolt is now the fastest man in the world. Who says no one is faster then a bullet?
