2009 Top 5 Movies

2009 was a good year in film. I think 2010 might beat it out, but I can't predict the future.

I didn't see everything I wanted to this year. I didn't see Avatar, In The Loop, Hurt Locker and a few more.

So I can't really say that this list really captures the year.

Also I don't fuck with art films that much so if I missed some piece of shit Vincent Gallo dud I sincerely apologize with all my heart.

Also while I'm taking a piss..."Where The Wild Things Are" was bleh. Sorry Spike at least you made your money son. Of course I'm hugely bias. As I think the best thing he ever did was Pharcyde's "Drop" and Girl's "Mouse". Love those.

#5 The Carter

This movie is sort of an anomaly. It had the potential to be one of the best documentaries ever, but legal snafus and creative differences made the film self destruct. Who ever was directing the film did a great job of filming and a horrendous job of interviewing Wayne. The whole time you get the sense that he is completely put off by the crew's presence and their lack of understanding how to talk to him.

They wanted to cover the "sensational" highlights of his career over and over, Wayne shooting himself, losing his virginity at 11, selling drugs, but failed to realize that if you just let him talk about whatever crazy shit he is thinking about the film would have written itself.

Still worth a watch and is very entertaining, but again lots of potential and not a lot of substance.

#4 Inglourious Basterds

It wasn't what everyone expected including myself, but I like this flick. The dialogue was awesome and the comedic relief was epic. Brad Pitt's best role since Snatch possibly.

#3 The Hangover

I don't really care what you think. I died the first time I saw this with the Ice Man. I laughed hard and it validated my point that Zach Galifianakis was the most slept on comedian in the world. The Tyson cameo for the win. Don't front.

#2 Tyson

Best documentary of the year. Hands down. The single most interesting portrait of one human being I have ever seen. I have always been on team Tyson. Every 80's kid should be. To me he represented being the best. There was no disputing it. He simply ruled. To see his thought process and to hear his perspective in a way that was so truly candid was awesome.

#1 Bronson

My personal favorite for so many reasons.

Just an amazing film. Superbly acted and wonderfully shot. I can't really say anything else. If dude doesn't get nominated for an Oscar it would really be a gross over site, but then again the Academy doesn't even recognize "Comedy" as real category of film so I don't think they are firing on all cylinders to begin with.

Lil Wayne Vs. Lil Lenox

Lil Lenox from Skip Buringrud on Vimeo.

For those that don't me personally this is my son Lenox b/k/a Baby Zeus and yours truly getting dumb to "Go Dj" by the Young Man Young Carter Fly Weezy F. Baby himself.

I'm not sure why people complain about having kids? They're like miniature drunk people that you can take everywhere with you plus you get to dress them however you want and they love you more than any person you've ever known.

Lil Wayne "Da Drought 3"

So much hype about Wayne a.k.a Weezy F. Baby a.k.a Young Money a.k.a Young Carter etc.

The draw for me with Wayne is that he's so over the top. He's the only rapper out that will just say something so out of the pocket that you question his sanity.

I've went ahead and provided some examples of this below:

"If you don't like it/f*ck you with AIDS dick."

"L' L' lillie pad nigga L'look at the monster
y'you dont wanna crash like la la labamba."

"My shit poppin’ like im chris, no chris brown bitch
this up town bitch, that uptown shit, like what now
shut up you shut down bitch, now sit down bitch
we gets down bitch, now sit down bitch, don’t make a sound bitch
like a clown bitch, that red dot cover your nose like a clown bitch."

Who says this sh*t? The man has a gift. Whether you think he's good or not is not the point.

Da Drought 3 is widely considered his best album or mixtape whatever you want to call it. It comes off like an album because it's tag free and you don't have to listen to some assh*le shouting "cannnnooooonnnnn" every 15 seconds.

I went ahead and posted both Part 1 and Part 2. Do yourself a favor and download them both and judge things for yourself. You'll be entertained either way.

Album Covers

The rap mixtape cover game is so weak it is almost comical. Look at any prominent mixtape website and you will be inundated with horrible, busy, disorienting photoshop light effects, etc.

The formula is this:

1. Some dude presents (big obnoxious type face)
2. A rapper (claiming to still sell coke or crack or both)
3. Absurd amounts of airbrushed skin and lighting effects
4. Movie poster knock off theme with accompanying type face (Godfather, Scarface, City of God, Shottas, Goodfellas, etc)

Granted this observation is not going to usher in a new movement of better design, but there are some decent covers like the one above in the sea of crappy mixtapes.

All this non sense has me reminiscing of the good ol' days when No Limit was running the album cover game. Back then all the covers were ridiculously comical in sort of a "we are serious" type of way.

Peep my personal favorite Mr. Serv-On if you doubt me.

That aside, this cover is quite creative and uses a pretty cool split person concept that works really well. Sure, the coke rap genre has reached its plateau and will surely become passe soon, but that doesn't mean that there isn't creative people still involved in it.

Lil Wayne Condoms Ad

I wish my creativity stretched to the absurd lengths that is "Lil Wayne."

Anyone who hates on him truly has no sense of humor or love for theatrics.

There are so many things that are socially irresponsible with this ad, but then I also feel the need to conceit defeat to the genius of the dread headed savant and all around publicity master Young Carter.

Touche Weezy F. Baby. Touche indeed.
