A Lesson For Life

Ladies and gentlemen, it's called style. You either have it or you don't.

Larry Johnson has style, clearly.

Ed* Damn that is an outfit. Has anyone in the history of time ever been better dressed then that? Honestly.

There are several rumors going around that Heavy Manners will be having a web sale with all tee shirts priced at $14 dollars (US) for a whole week.

I Hate Shoes

Walked into work about 10 minutes ago.

19 cartons of Nike are waiting for yours truly to be opened, counted, marked off, checked against the purchase order, entered into the system, tagged, scanned, re-packaged, labeled, and sent to stores.

I gave up on sneakers long ago my friends. Unless I get them in the mail from a rep or the like then you probably won't see me with a new pair of kicks ever.

But if you're into kicks and the whole thing by all means enjoy yourself and your hobby.

Or better yet come down to the warehouse and help a brother out with this mountain of Nike.

Damn you Beaverton, damn you!

Persue In China

One of my favorite artists and all around favorite people Persue (COD/SUK/7th Letter) sent me these pics of him doing a live piece in China of all places.

Persue is one of the few writers that I know that can burn with letters and characters. If you've followed his work then you know you already know about his Bunny Kitty character and the cult following that follows it.

Mavado Arrested

Looks like Mr. Gangsta 4 Life a.k.a Mavado finally got caught up.

He walked into custody himself and the charges stem from an incident from last year. We'll see what happens. It could be some rap actor bullsh*t since a lot of dancehall artists want to be so American these days. By being "american" I mean going to court for stupid sh*t.

Can everybody just stop shooting each other?

Gang War Riddim

Ed* There was a video for this? Would have liked to have known that sooner.

If you're feeling this tune it's on the Heavy Manners "Fire Pon Dem" Mix which you can cop for free HERE

Jah Thomas

Jah Thomas a.k.a Nkrumah was one of the few double threats in reggae. He was both a deejay and producer which is rare by any standards. Besides having big tunes as an artist he also produced a ton of songs under his label Midnight Rock. Anyone relevant at the time recorded tunes for Jah Thomas including Johnny Osbourne, Barrington Levy, Tristan Palmer, Sugar Minot, and the list goes on.

I had this album for quite a while before I cracked it open and gave it a proper listen. The vocals have a noticeable echo or delay on them that make it sound like your at the dance which is good or bad depending on what your tastes are. All the backing is by Radics and the production is solely Jah Thomas. "Dance A Fi Cork" is my favorite tune on here by far.

Enjoy!

Track Listing:

1. African Thing
2. Love Pon Corner
3. Dance A Fi Cork
4. Seek & Find
5. Love One Another
6. Part Two
7. Gwine A School
8. Jah Jah Guidance
9. Mr. Barrister
10. Two In The Family

Seattle has not been kind to my body this winter, seeing as this is the second time The Gipper has gotten sick and been forced to work in the abysmal tundra that is the warehouse.

Friends

Ed* I was forced to steal this from Jordan "Red Bull" Nicholson's photobucket because it pretty much captures the "radness" that these two dudes evoke on the daily.

Doesn't get any better in my book.

Heavy Manners in Michigan and Hawaii

The Heavy Manners account list is always growing. We'd like to welcome two new great accounts Kicks HI and Citizen (Michigan).

Kicks HI has been around since the beginning of a lot this stuff and have there hands in several different pots like the Saint Alfred Store and clothing line, Bitter Sweet, amongst other things. Google them.

Citizen is another one of those shops acting as oasis for folks who can't get their hands on a lot of good brands etc. Support your local shops, seen?

Horace Andy

Above: Horace Andy present day

Horace Andy is really good. If you don't have any "Sleepy" in your collection I suggest you change that. I don't know anything about this album. It was released in 1979 and credits Andy and King Tubby as producers. It's quite mellow and doesn't have any real "powerful" tracks, but it is definitely something you can put on and get "spleefed" out in your van, if that's your sort of thing.

Track Listing:

1. Pure Ranking
2. I've Been Around
3. What Eyes Don't See
4. African Liberation
5. Jah Gift To Man
6. Modern Babylon
7. Totally Free
8. Change Your Ways
9 No Love In The City
10. Jah Is The One
11. Natural Mystic
12. Strictly Ranking (Ghetto Style)

John Cardiel

I grabbed this dvd Vice did on skateboard legend John Cardiel at 35th North yesterday and watched it last night.

I can still remember when I was a skat rat and I got the Thrasher issue when he got Skater of The Year, and seeing Sight Unseen when it dropped too and all I thought was how good he was, but after watching this dvd I have so much more respect for what this guy accomplished on a skateboard.

He should probably go down as one the top skateboarders of all time when it is all said and done.
If your skate shop doesn't have the free dvd don't trip cause you can watch it on VBS.TV for free. Click the link below.

Heavy Manners Mix on Turntable Lab

There is no stopping the "Fire Pon Dem" Mix, seen?

We are happy to announce that TurnTable Lab wooped up a whole bunch of copies of the first official Heavy Manners mix by Selecta Dasheye featuring Sizzla.

I've been put on to so much good music because of The Lab and now to have something of our own on the site is a pretty good feeling.

Go there a buy a copy before they're gone for good. Only 300 physical copies were pressed and we won't be making any more after those.

Special thanks to all the posse that have helped out: Dash, Unite, Lemon Red, Eleven, Snack y C'Mish, Charlie Pratt, Nick, The Fader Mag online, TTL, Rogue, and all the folks sending the emails.

Dizzee Rascal "Where Da G's" Video

Ed* I know this tune is old, but I've never seen this video until now. Why can't there be more hip-hop/grime/rap whatever you want to call it like this?

Ed* Also little bonus Bun rocking that Flying Coffin Fitted Jammy

Ed* I had a chance to meet Dizzee a few years back and dude was extremely cool and ego free.

Clint Eastwood & General Saint

A lot of the albums that I post pon' the blog are stuff that I've come across in the last few months some in the last few years and some from way back. This falls into the latter. This was my first Henry "Junjo" Lawes produced album that I ever owned and it might possibly be my favorite.

This album dropped the same year I was born (1981) and is one of the best examples of the "rub a dub" genre, period. Although, a lot of folks have their own definition of what they define "rub a dub" as. I would say it best exemplifies the sound that is derivitive of standard roots, but uses the bass and drum in a much deeper and heavier style then what was being done by most producers of the era.

Clint Eastwood has a really solid deejay catalogue full of great tunes where Saint only seems to have this album and "Stop That Train" LP. Maybe Saint is the Fathead to Clint's Yellowman? I truly don't know anything about Saint outside of those two albums.

I'm straying away from the topic. This album is ridiculously good. All of the tunes are classic Junjo style and Clint Eastwood's chat paired with General Saint really makes this one stand out. The chorus' and melodies use a lot of call and response style chat with a lot of peps in between i.e "Riiiggghhhhhtttt", "OOOOOOiiiinnnkkkkk."

So many good tunes it's really unfair to single one out, but if I had to I'd say that "Tribute To General Echo" is my fave. The obvious reason being that it is a tribute to "Ranking Slackness" a.k.a General Echo, but also the dubbed out riddim by Junjo and Scientist is of my favorite tunes ever and just never gets tired.

At any rate don't pass this one up.

Cheers

Versus Is Back

Those miscreants at Versus were laying low during their move from the old building to their new home and people were left wondering what happened to the only oasis left in that god forsaken wasteland that is the Inner Empire. Thankfully they returned just in time for spring and with a whole new line up of high quality tees no less.

I have a lot of respect for Mike and Graham seeing as they made it a point to promote the culture they grew up with in their home town of Temecula/Murrieta instead of just moving to the city like everyone else. In a sense they are doing more to teach the youth then the majority of stores/brands because the kids in their community would have no proximity to the DIY/skate/art gallery/graffiti culture without them.

For more info peep the site:

Versus Store

For all you out of towners they take phone orders as well.
